Effect
The trick "52 Memories" by Jack Parker and Andi Gladwin is a versatile collection of card magic, mentalism, and coin routines. One standout effect involves two spectators: one physically selects a card while the other merely thinks of one. The magician appears to struggle reading the thoughts of the "harder" spectator, only to reveal that the thought-of card has inexplicably appeared on the table. Meanwhile, the physically selected card transforms into the other spectator's choice, creating a layered and surprising climax.
Full Details
"52 Memories" is a 250-300 page book available as an ebook from Vanishing Inc. for $35. It includes:
- Small packet tricks (using 4-10 cards).
- Full-deck routines.
- Moves and utility techniques (deceptive switches, controls, forces).
- Coin magic blended with card tricks.
- Variations on the 21-card trick.
- Mentalism effects ("instant stooging").
Unlike its sequel, "52 Explorations," this book incorporates mentalism and coin work, making it more diverse. Many routines rely on prearranged stacks of 10-15 cards, which can limit seamless performance chaining.
Who Should Consider the Trick
This book suits intermediate to advanced magicians comfortable with sleight of hand and spectator management. It’s ideal for those who enjoy:
- Theatrical, interactive card magic.
- Mentalism blended with card tricks.
- Routines adaptable to close-up, parlor, or stage settings.
Beginners may find some techniques challenging due to the reliance on advanced moves and stack management.
Difficulty
Most effects require intermediate skill. While not overly complex, they demand:
- Proficiency in card controls and switches.
- Ability to manage stacked decks (10-15 card setups).
- Comfort with spectator interaction for mentalism phases.
The reviewer notes that while some routines are easy to grasp (like the highlighted two-spectator effect), others need practice to master timing and misdirection.
What Magicians Say
Sebastian, the reviewer, prefers "52 Memories" over "52 Explorations," rating it 8.25/10. He praises its unique twists on classic plots and clear explanations but notes that stack-dependent routines can be impractical for table-hopping. Key takeaways:
- Pros: Well-taught, fun, and unique effects; excellent illustrations and writing.
- Cons: Stack setups hinder quick resets; some routines require a table.
He highlights the deceptive card switch and mentalism routine as standout features, calling the latter "foolproof" in performance.
For magicians seeking a mix of card magic and mentalism with creative methods, "52 Memories" offers strong material despite its setup limitations.
