Effect
The Elms Le Count is a classic card trick where the magician appears to have an uncanny ability to count cards accurately despite seemingly random conditions. The audience sees the magician deal cards face down and face up in an unpredictable manner, yet the magician always knows the exact count of face-up or face-down cards at any given moment. The effect is baffling because it defies logical explanation, making it a strong piece of magic when performed well.
Full Details
The Elms Le Count relies on a clever principle that allows the magician to maintain control over the count of face-up and face-down cards without obvious moves. The method is subtle and does not require complex sleight of hand, making it accessible to many performers. However, the trick's effectiveness depends on the deck's design—borderless cards, like the Honeybee Worker Edition, can make certain aspects of the trick more challenging due to increased visibility of card orientations.
Who Should Consider the Trick
This trick is ideal for magicians who enjoy mathematical or self-working card effects. It suits performers who want a strong, repeatable routine that does not rely on difficult sleights. Those who frequently perform with bordered decks will find it easier to execute, while users of borderless decks (like the Honeybee Worker Edition) may need to adjust their handling to minimize flashes.
Information on How Difficult It Is to Perform
The Elms Le Count is not technically demanding, making it suitable for beginners and experienced magicians alike. The primary challenge lies in presentation and maintaining audience engagement. The trick requires smooth handling and natural movements to prevent spectators from detecting the method. Performers using borderless decks should be aware that the lack of borders makes card orientation more visible, requiring extra care during execution.
What Magicians Say
BAM_magic, in their review of the Honeybee Worker Edition cards, notes that borderless decks can complicate certain tricks, including the Elms Le Count. They explain: "Because these are borderless, it may be harder to do certain card tricks that involve some face up cards and some face down cards like an Elms Le Count or something." This observation highlights the importance of deck selection when performing this trick. While the Honeybee Worker Edition excels in many areas, its borderless design may not be the best choice for routines that rely on subtle orientation concealment.
For magicians who prefer borderless decks but still want to perform the Elms Le Count, adjustments in handling or alternative methods may be necessary to maintain the trick's deceptive quality.
What people are saying about Elms Le Count
BAM_magic says...
Because these are borderless, some card tricks can be harder to do because without a border it's pretty easy to spot a face down card in a face up deck or a face up card in a face down deck even if it's a very minor flash or sliver of white seeing it's pretty visible so that's just one downside with these cards.
