Effect
The "Falafel Sandwich" is a card trick where a spectator selects a card, which then appears to travel between two face-up Black Aces. The magician first shows the Aces separately, then makes one Ace "find" the other. Finally, the spectator's card visually rises to the top, sandwiched between the two Aces. The routine creates a strong illusion of impossible card movement.
Full Details
The trick is inspired by Percy Diaconus’ "Collector’s" routine from 21st Century Card Magic by James Swain. It uses key sleights such as:
- Flexible Switch (popularized by Ed Marlo) to secretly exchange a card during a fan display.
- Pharaoh Shuffle to control the selected card between the Aces.
- Dribble Shuffle combined with a "telescope" effect to create the visual appearance of the card sliding into place.
- Double Lift to conceal the true position of the Aces.
The routine requires precise card positioning and relies on misdirection through engaging patter. The creator encourages magicians to experiment with different setups to fit their style.
Who Should Consider the Trick
This trick is ideal for magicians who:
- Enjoy sandwich plot routines.
- Are comfortable with intermediate card sleights.
- Want a visually deceptive trick with strong audience reactions.
- Like adaptable routines that allow for personalization.
Information on How Difficult It Is to Perform
The "Falafel Sandwich" requires proficiency in several intermediate techniques:
- The Flexible Switch demands smooth handling to avoid detection.
- The Pharaoh Shuffle must be controlled to ensure the selected card lands correctly.
- The Dribble Shuffle timing affects the illusion’s effectiveness.
While not beginner-friendly, the creator provides multiple approaches, making it accessible to those still refining their skills.
What Magicians Say
SeanDevine, the creator, describes the routine as "brilliant" and emphasizes its visual impact. He notes that the trick was born from a "happy accident" while experimenting with other routines. He advises performers to keep the dribble "sloppy" to enhance the magical appearance and suggests using patter to reinforce the illusion.
The trick is praised for its deceptive nature, with SeanDevine stating, "It's a very magical moment when they see the card appear between the Aces." He encourages magicians to adapt the routine to their style, making it a versatile addition to any card magic repertoire.
What people are saying about Falafel Sandwich
SeanDevine says...
I was playing around with a collector's routine out of 21st century card magic by James Swain um called Percy collectors by Percy diaconus and I was playing around with maybe way to do with just a single sandwich between two face up cards instead of the four races and something happened and I was like holy that's amazing and so sometimes the best things are born or created out of happy accidents.
